A process for preparing dispersions of particles, especially aqueous dispersions is described. The process relates to a dispersion process where a polar solvent is added during the dispersion such that the hydrogen bonding solubility parameter component, of the initial dispersion mixture increases at least 1.5 units. When the polar solvent added is water the dispersion process is called a Solvent-to-Water Process.

 Improved Media Mill Process

 US 7789333 · Issued Nov 1, 2002

This invention relates to an improved media mill process wherein there is good fluidization of the media, predictable scale-up behavior, efficient particle size reduction, low contamination and improvements to the performance of the final dispersion. Dupont’s Central Research & Development filed a patent that uses cubic media described herein as the primary process constituent to prepare product for Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) for pharmaceuticals. This patent was filed simultaneously with the Performance Coatings patent described here.

A process for making aqueous pigmented ink jet inks wherein a pigment and a polymeric dispersant are dispersed in an aqueous vehicle, the improvement wherein comprising subjecting the mixture of pigment, polymeric dispersant and aqueous medium to ultrasonic energy whereby the percentage of particles above 200 nanometers in the ink is decreased.
